PENLAND Photo
I attended the Penland School of Craft for the third time in July of 2023 for Photography in the Fourth Dimension, taught by Jeff Goodman and Robin Dreyer. In this class, we experimented with several traditional photography techniques, as well as developed digital skills in Lightroom and Photoshop and shooting digital photography on DSLR cameras.
Photograms
This collection of images were all made by briefly exposing photo sensitive paper to light while layering a variety of objects. I developed all of these in the Penland Darkroom, then scanned and digitally inverted to edited the images to create this series.
I wanted to explore different levels of translucency, length of exposures, layering, and using double and triple exposures with these images. I was very inspired too by the combination of organic and manufactured elements, and the difference in the way the light was blocked with each object.
Large Format
These images were all created using a large format (or view) camera, and manually adjusting elements like aperture, shutter speed, and focus to capture an image on paper. These were later developed these images in the darkroom, and scanned and inverted then digitally in Photoshop.
This photo series featured themes of time, death, and religion, with many images taken in the Penland cemetery.
This series was done in collaboration with fellow artist and photo model, Julia King.
Pinhole
These photos were created using several handmade pinhole cameras and using different exposure times as well as multiple exposures to experiment with creating images. For this series, I wanted to capture some of my favorite areas around Penland's campus: the iron studio, the post office, the dye shed, and a few more.
These images were also developed in the darkroom and then scanned and digitally altered in Photoshop. I loved the unexpected quality of these and learning how much time was needed for each!
Digital Work
These images were all shot using a digital or DSLR camera, throughout Penland's campus and surrounding area. I sought to capture images I found inspiring with their color, movement, and history - Penland's landscape and story is so inspiring and resulted in a ton of images for both my reference and final work!
